Lily, pictured above, is smiling because of the time she spends with Bear each week.
A message from Lily's mom, Bridget Fagerholt:
"Lily has more than a few things going on disability-wise. She has good days and bad days, but on Bear days, she always tries her best. Lily isn’t coordinated or able to hold herself up for long periods of time, but Bear supports her and helps her balance. Lily’s smile and laugh are infectious, and from the time we put her helmet in the car, she’s smiling and ready. When Bear is led from the barn, she is ready to jump out of her wheelchair and into the saddle. Bear’s fluffy mane and gentle gait stimulate and support Lily. His endless patience as she wiggles around, leans on him, and practices gross motor skills is something special to watch. He flicks his ears and listens as the volunteers practice counting, and he stands still as a statue as Lily works on following directions, sitting tall, reaching her hands above her head or out to the side, twisting, and manipulating various objects. It takes a lot more energy for Lily to accomplish things than a typical child. By the end of her 30-minute session, she’s worn out and . . . he holds her up and delivers her safely to the gate."
GAIT has been serving our communities for almost 30 years. Now more than ever, we need funds to maintain and grow our programs to meet the needs of both our horses and participants. Our programs provide effective services for those with cognitive, physical, and emotional/mental challenges. Our horses can carry clients' weights, listen to their struggles, strengthen their bodies, quiet their minds, and reflect their emotions as biofeedback for learning.
The difference our horses, staff, and volunteers make in the lives of those we help is priceless. Your support ensures we can continue offering these life-changing services, while also expanding our programs to reach more individuals.
